It's a great way to beat the heat for the entire family. Doug Russell Aquatic Center The Doug Russell Aquatic Center is another amazing public offering that includes a resort-like atmosphere for very little cost. It offers two pools and multiple water slides. The main pool has a zero-depth entry point and a lazy river. The center offers picnic tables so you can bring a lunch and some shades for when you’re out of the water. Moss Creek Lake If you’re looking for a more natural swimming pool, then try out Moss Creek Lake. It’s near Big Spring, and worth the short drive in the comfort of your Lincoln SUV. You can swim in the lake from a beach area on the shore or take a boat out with the impressive towing capacity of a Lincoln. The park has campsites for longer stays, and more to discover when you’re ready to dry off. UTPB Park Jurassic Jungle Sprayground Here’s another short trip to Odessa for fans of keeping cool and dinosaurs. The Jurassic Jungle Sprayground is located on the UTPB Park grounds. Opened in 2008, the park features fun cascading water installations that keep you cool. There are two shade umbrellas, but if you visit in spring, you won’t be competing for space under them, thanks to the cooler temperatures. Best of all, it’s a public park and completely free. Odessa Meteor Crater If the family loves sci-fi, why not see some real outer space phenomenon at the Odessa Meteor Crater. The site was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1965 and the existing visitor center was added in 2002. You’ll find meteorites, tektites, and other material pertaining to meteor craters on display. Big Spring State Park There’s nothing like spending time under the majesty of the 200-foot bluff at Big Spring State Park. This natural attraction is a leisurely drive to the east, best accomplished in the comfort of a new Lincoln SUV. Once you arrive, you’ll find over 382 acres to explore via hiking, climbing, and biking. Have a picnic at the top of Scenic Mountain and get back to Midland before sunset! Lake Carlsbad The gulf coast is a pretty big road trip, but if you’re looking for a great waterfront experience, there’s one a lot closer at Lake Carlsbad. Maybe you’ve already seen the nearby caverns and are looking for a more traditional relaxation experience. Lake Carlsbad Recreation Area is a 125-acre beach park located on the Pecos River with boating, fishing, picnicking, and lots more fun things to do.
